Yesterday we stayed on the sofa: PlayStation, Xbox, autumn dates. Today the other direction: sports news you can actually turn into movement. The first weekend of September is packed — women’s basketball World Cup in Berlin, Győr in the handball Champions League, an NB I round, and Sunday the Budapest half marathon. Not a recap of every match. The calendar, plus a question: do you stand up after the game?
Women’s basketball World Cup: Hungary back after 28 years
The FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup runs in Berlin 4–13 September, 16 teams. The Hungarian national team had not been at a World Cup since 1998 — this is their 6th appearance. Group B: Hungary, South Korea, Nigeria, France. Yesterday, 4 September at 21:00 in the Uber Arena, Péter Völgyi’s side lost 53–99 to France. 46 points; the gap was already 41 at half-time. For France, Gabby Williams, Dominique Malonga and Marine Johannes each scored 17.
What is left in the group
- Today, Saturday 14:15 – Nigeria–Hungary, Max-Schmeling-Halle. Nigeria lost 81–99 to South Korea yesterday. Both teams need the win if they want to live in the group.
- Monday 7 September – Hungary–South Korea. Korea opened the group strongly.
- Quarter-finals: 8–10 September. Final: 13 September.
You can cheer from the sofa. After 40 minutes the knees lock the same way as after a 90-minute stream. The difference: you can stand up at half-time.
Győr in the women’s handball Champions League: today 18:00, Koprivnica
The first Match of the Week of the 2026/27 women’s EHF Champions League group stage: HC Podravka – Győri Audi ETO KC, Saturday 18:00, Koprivnica, Josip Samaržija-Bepo hall. Győr did not drop a point to the Croatian champions in 10 previous CL meetings (2007–2021). In August they won a test 37–24, Tjaša Stanko with 8 goals.
If you have 90 minutes for the Champions League, you have 90 minutes to move as well — you do not have to choose. The two work back to back.
NB I matchday 7 + the national team’s autumn calendar
The league is tight: Puskás Akadémia lead on 12 points, Ferencváros and Újpest on 10, Győri ETO and MTK on 9. Matchday 7 has the Ferencváros–Újpest derby, plus Paks–Debrecen, MTK–Kisvárda, Zalaegerszeg–Puskás Akadémia. A derby on TV is sitting work. A shared programme after the derby is not.
- 25 September – Hungary–Ukraine, Puskás Aréna. UEFA Nations League, League B, Group 2.
- 28 September – Northern Ireland–Hungary, Windsor Park, Belfast.
- 2 October – Hungary–Georgia, Puskás Aréna.
Sunday 08:00: Wizz Air Budapest Half Marathon
The 41st Wizz Air Budapest Half Marathon starts Sunday 6 September at 08:00 from Pázmány Péter sétány (Lágymányos). 21.097 km through the centre, over bridges, on World Heritage stretches. There is also a 10 km (around noon), plus pair and trio relays. BSI’s autumn season opens with this. The SPAR Budapest Marathon Festival is 10–11 October — if 21 km is still a lot this year, you can train toward that.
You do not need 21 km to move
- 20–25 km a week is enough for many people to finish a half. If you did not enter: a 30-minute walk tonight still counts.
- Watching a match is sitting work. Stairs at half-time, get off two stops early, 15 minutes on the Danube bank.
- If half the group does not run, find movement where nobody stays on the bench.
VR is movement too — and it is social
At PartyVR we do not promise a marathon. We promise 90 minutes where you are actually together and your pulse goes up. Meta Quest 3, 8 headsets, Újbuda, next to Allee. Not a gym substitute — but a different genre from the sofa.
- Beat Saber – rhythm, arms, legs. After 3–4 tracks you sweat, and everyone sees the score.
- Gorilla Tag – tag, squats, jumps, laughter. Cardio, not a mirror workout.
- Pistol Whip – stepping, dodging, the music carries you. Cinematic, but your calves will talk tomorrow.
- Superhot VR – time only moves when you move. The sofa is the opposite rule.
It does not replace Sunday’s 10 km. But it is better than another hour of scrolling after the match. And there is something running does not give you: you are in the same room, you hear each other, no split-screen. If half the group does not want 21 kilometres, 90 minutes of shared, physical play in Budapest is still a different offer.
