Mixed reality on Quest 3 – what it is, and why it is not the same as VR

Through the headset you still see your own room — except aliens are climbing on the sofa. In plain language: what mixed reality is, which games run, and where to try it in Újbuda.

In classic VR the headset puts another world in front of your eyes, and the living room disappears. In mixed reality (MR) the Quest 3’s colour cameras show the real space, and the game is painted into it: the monster steps out from behind your coffee table, the laser bends around the actual sofa. In 2026 this is no longer a demo — the Quest 3 and 3S library has enough titles that a 90-minute booking has something to show.

VR vs mixed reality – in one sentence each

  • VR: a fully virtual space (Beat Saber, Pavlov, Superhot).
  • Passthrough: the camera feed the headset uses to show the room if you step outside the boundary.
  • Mixed reality: gameplay is built on the real room — walls, floor and furniture are part of the map.

Quest 2 passthrough was black-and-white and thin. Quest 3 works with two colour cameras; it is not as perfect as the naked eye, but it is enough that in First Encounters an alien sits on your sofa and you believe it.

How does room scanning work?

Before the first MR game the headset walks the space: floor, walls, ceiling, furniture. That becomes a geometry map so virtual objects do not clip through the table, and occlusion lines up. On a 50+ m², cleared play floor — like ours — this is faster and more spectacular than in a cluttered living room.

Games you can try with us

First Encounters – the demo

A free MR game bundled with Quest 3 / 3S: colourful “puffian” creatures flood the room; you catch them by colour. Short, but this is the title that convinces sceptics passthrough is not a trick. A good first 10 minutes of any booking.

Spatial Ops – laser tag in your own space

Resolution Games’ MR shooter: the real room is the map, up to 8 people side by side (co-located). Team deathmatch, capture the flag, domination. It won an Auggie in 2025 (“Best Game or Toy”). If someone asks for “VR laser tag”, this is often what they mean — except the walls are your walls.

Elixir – magic with hand tracking

You cast in the real room with hand gestures, no controllers. Slower, more visual, less competitive — good for people who are cautious about shooters because of motion sickness.

What else is on Quest 3 in 2026? (at home)

If you have a headset at home: Laser Dance puts lasers around your own furniture (from the Cubism developer); Starship Home opens the living-room wall into a spaceship window. Those work less well in a venue, because they need your unique room. We put titles calibrated to a shared, large, empty play floor first: First Encounters, Spatial Ops, Elixir.

Who is it for — and who is it not?

  • Yes: anyone who has already played VR and wants “something new”; anyone who wants laser tag without a suburban arena; anyone who wants to show parents that Quest 3 is not only Beat Saber.
  • Carefully: strong motion sickness, a tight space, kids under 10. Meta: 10 is the account minimum, 10–12 with a parent account; under 10, no. Our usual recommendation is 13+; younger needs a parent present plus a prior chat.
  • Passthrough does not replace the naked eye: distance and colour are a bit off. That is why we clear the play floor and keep the boundaries.

FAQ

Do you need extra gear?

No. The Quest 3 cameras are in the headset. You play Spatial Ops with controllers; in Elixir your hands are the wand.

Can VR and MR run in the same booking?

Yes. Plenty of people start with First Encounters, then Beat Saber or Pavlov. 90 minutes fits an MR demo and two “proper” VR games.
