In the films there is always a red wire and a blue wire. A hero, a beeping clock, a pair of cutters. Real bomb disposal does not look like that. It is slow. Remote. Several people talk before anyone steps closer. Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes takes that pressure and turns it into a laughing, shouting round. One person in a headset sees the device. The others shout from a paper manual. If you go quiet, the round is over.
What real disposal looks like – in simple terms
An EOD team, a bomb technician, does not “cut a wire”. First they close the site. Then they look from a distance at what it even is. The film hero works alone. In reality the decision belongs to several people: the one who approaches, the one who watches the picture, the one who knows the type. The goal is not a heroic act. The goal is that nobody is hurt – even if the device is destroyed under control instead of being handled by hand.
- Lock-down and evacuation: the area is cleared, traffic is diverted. Nobody “has a closer look”.
- Remote reconnaissance: a robot, cameras, often X-ray. The device is seen as an image first, not by hand.
- Identification: homemade, industrial or military; whether there is a timer. That decides if anyone moves in.
- Making it safe: often a disruptor or a controlled detonation – not cutting coloured wires. The film tells this backwards.
- Check and documentation: only then is the site opened again.
The coloured wire, “which one do I cut”, the ten-second countdown: that is movie concentrate. The real work is communication. One person sees something. The others know something. If the two do not meet, the situation gets worse. The game does not copy this exactly – and it should not. It keeps only the pressure: talk, or the round ends. What is here is a public, simplified picture, not a how-to.
What Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes kept from that
Steel Crate Games built an asymmetric game. One player sees the bomb – here in VR, on a Quest 3. The others get a thick manual and never see the device. There are modules: wires, buttons, symbols you recognise from films, but the rule is always on the paper. There is a timer. There is a strike limit. If the people outside cannot find the page, the person inside cannot guess. That is why it works for team building: the faster player does not win. The one who speaks clearly does.
- Asymmetry: one sees, the others know. Same shape as remote reconnaissance – except nobody gets hurt.
- Time pressure: minutes, not hours. The laughter comes from that, not from the bang.
- The manual: in Hungarian here. Thirty seconds of explanation, then the first round.
- Rotation: everyone tries the headset. The outside role is just as hard.
How it runs at PartyVR in Újbuda
1113 Budapest, Edömér u. 4., next to Allee. One Quest 3 is enough for the game – the other five to seven people sit with the manual. Low movement, fine from age 10. One bomb lasts 3–8 minutes. A 90-minute booking fits many rounds, and Beat Saber or Gorilla Tag can follow if you want a pulse.
- 1 person in VR, 2–10 on the manual. Best at 4–8.
- Hungarian manual, help on site. No homework.
- Standing play, motion-sickness risk close to zero.
- Birthday, team building, school trip: this is the round where the quiet ones shout too.
Real disposal is a serious job. The game only borrows the talking. If someone in the group always knows everything – sit them on the manual. If someone likes the spotlight – give them the headset. Then swap. The bomb here is pixels. The shouting is real.
