On the PartyVR blog we usually write about indoor programmes and VR. This time we deliberately turn toward the sofa: in early September 2026 both PlayStation and Xbox dropped a batch of news that will shape the next 8–10 weeks. Not a trailer recap of every title — the dates worth putting in the calendar if you play on PS5 or Xbox.
PlayStation: double State of Play, 30+ games
On 3 September Sony ran two shows back to back: a regular State of Play and a Japan Edition. Officially more than 30 games. Instead of big surprises you got dates, trailers and DLC — in autumn that is the more useful genre.
What will actually be in your hands soon
- Marvel’s Wolverine – 15 September 2026, PS5. Insomniac / Marvel’s action-adventure got a launch trailer; Jean Grey and Team X show up alongside Logan. Two weeks, not “someday”.
- Grand Theft Auto VI – 19 November 2026, PS5. State of Play also showed two limited DualSense controllers (black and white Vice City mood). Pre-order: 10 September; controllers and game on the same day, 19 November.
- Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition – 1 October. Now Wanted survival mode + Echoes of Sekigahara DLC. Atsu’s story did not end with the base game.
- LEGO PlayStation set – 1 October. 1,911 pieces, roughly 1:1 with the original console (26 cm wide). Nostalgia, not gameplay — but it still goes in the calendar.
Autumn–winter if you wanted an RPG or a Japanese title
- Final Fantasy Resonance – 22 October. HD-2D action; Sephiroth appears in the trailer, and chapter one is already a demo on the PlayStation Store (saves carry over).
- Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown – 15 October, a large expansion.
- Hunter’s Moon – 25 October. First-person folk horror, 17th-century English witch hunts.
- Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World – 3 December, PS5.
- Gran Turismo 7 Spec IV – two waves, October and December: new tracks, 12 cars, Family mode, online drift.
2027 dates that just landed
- Final Fantasy VII Revelation – 8 April 2027, PS5. The closing part of the Remake trilogy; this was the show’s long closing deep dive (Highwind, grapple, chocobo, FITS combat).
- Fate/Extra Record – 28 January 2027, PS5 and PS4.
- Gundam Rogue Orbit – 5 March 2027.
- Daba: Land of Water Scar (China Hero Project) – spring 2027, PS5.
- Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 – 2027, PS5. Your own hero, your own fighting style.
Tokyo Game Show: 17–21 September
TGS turns 30 this year, and for the first time it is five days: Makuhari Messe, 17–18 September business days, 19–21 public days. 759 exhibitors, no Nintendo booth — that is already a habit. Four titles will be playable on the PlayStation stand:
- Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance
- Final Fantasy VII Revelation
- Marvel’s Wolverine (after the 15 September launch, mid-show)
- Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve (the series’ 30th anniversary)
If you are not flying to Tokyo: streamed showcases and the next day’s press leak still bring the trailers. Wolverine, though, you can start at home on the sofa by the time TGS opens.
Xbox Game Pass: September’s first wave
Xbox did not hold a State of Play; it held the usual Game Pass list. No day-one AAA block, but there is something to download — and something worth finishing by 15 September.
Coming on
- Speedrunners 2: King of Speed – 3 September (Ultimate, PC)
- Dice a Million – 4 September (Premium, Ultimate, PC)
- Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War – 8 September. The 2020 entry, not a new COD — but if you skipped the campaign, it is cheap now.
- The Royal Writ – 10 September. Medieval roguelike deckbuilder.
- Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage – 10 September.
- RuneScape: Dragonwilds – 15 September.
- Later in the month (second wave): Dune: Awakening on 22 September in the Ultimate / PC tier.
Leaving on 15 September
- Cyberpunk 2077 (cloud + console)
- Frostpunk 2 (PC)
- Dead Cells, Spiritfarer, Superliminal, Deep Rock Galactic Survivor, Commandos: Origins, Train Sim World 5
If you are still playing Cyberpunk or Frostpunk 2 “this weekend”: two weeks. After that you either buy it, or the Pass window is gone.
What is actually worth putting in the calendar?
- 8 September – Black Ops Cold War on Pass, if the group wants a COD campaign.
- 10 September – DualSense GTA VI controller pre-order + VF5 / Royal Writ on Pass.
- 15 September – Wolverine launches; same day Dragonwilds arrives, Cyberpunk leaves.
- 17–21 September – Tokyo Game Show (trailers from home).
- 1 October – Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition + LEGO PlayStation.
- 19 November – GTA VI on PS5.
- 8 April 2027 – Final Fantasy VII Revelation, if you finished the trilogy.
The sofa is full this autumn. If half the group does not want a 40-hour open world, or is tired of everyone staring at their own save: 90 minutes of shared, physical play in Budapest is still a different genre. On Quest 3, Pavlov, Beat Saber, Gorilla Tag — the same competitive laughter, and nobody is scrolling in between.
